This directory houses deep tactical analysis to elevate your play, teaching you how to outmaneuver any opponent through strategic placement.
The Philosophy of Gomoku Strategy: Five Stones in any Line
Every move in Gomoku should serve a dual purpose: expanding your own threats while restricting your opponent's space. To secure a win, focus on these tactical targets:
- Winning Shapes: Memorize active shapes like the open-four (which cannot be blocked) and the open-three (which forces a block).
- Creating Forks: The only guaranteed way to win against a perfect defense is to create a "double threat" or fork—specifically, a four-three fork or a double-three. Since the defender can only block one line per turn, the other line wins.
Famous Gomoku Openings to Learn
In tournament play, professional openings are categorized based on the position of the second stone (White) relative to the first (Black):
- The Direct Opening (Direct / 直指): Openings where the second stone (White) is placed adjacent to the first (Black). Popular direct openings include the Shuyetsu and Kyotsu.
- The Indirect Opening (Indirect / 斜指): Openings where the second stone is placed diagonally adjacent. Examples include Hoshi and Midzuki.
