How to Play Gomoku with Friends: A Quick Setup Guide

2026-07-11 00:11:06

Playing Gomoku (Five in a Row) is inherently a social experience. While competing against artificial intelligence is excellent for honing your tactical skills, the ultimate thrill lies in outsmarting someone you know. Setting up a match with a friend—whether they are sitting right next to you on the couch or living halfway across the globe—has never been easier. If you already understand the basic Gomoku rules, you are ready to challenge your peers. This guide outlines how to play Gomoku with friends using our instant matchmaking tools, creating private battlefields in seconds, and sharing your way to victory in the Gomoku online arena.

Step 1: Choose Your Battle Mode (Local vs. Online)

Before placing your first stone, determine whether you and your friend are sharing a physical space or playing remotely:

  • Local Pass-and-Play: If you are in the same room, you can play offline. Simply sit opposite each other and take turns placing stones on a single touchscreen device or physical wooden board. This classic format requires no internet connection and relies purely on standard turn-based mechanics.
  • Remote Online Battle: If your friend is remote, you must utilize our real-time matchmaking server. This connects both players instantly through separate devices, keeping game timers, chats, and board positions fully synchronized.

Step 2: Create a Private Online Room

To play remotely without random players interrupting your match, you must set up a private room. Our lobby system makes this process seamless:

1. Navigate to our online matchmaking lobby. Under the "Online Matchmaking" card, check the box labeled "Private Room (Hide from public)".

2. Click the "Create Room" button. The server will immediately process your request and generate a unique, secure game room with a 6-digit Room ID.

Step 3: Share the Invitation Link and QR Code

Once your private room is created, the system transitions into the "Waiting for Opponent" panel. You have two secure ways to invite your friend:

  • The Direct URL Link: Click the "Copy" button next to the invitation link box. This copies a direct URL containing your unique room ID and access token (e.g., `https://gomoku.net/online-battle/?room=XXXXXX&token=YYYYYY`). Paste this link into any messaging app (WhatsApp, Discord, WeChat, etc.) and send it to your friend.
  • The QR Code: If your friend is nearby or has a mobile device handy, they can simply open their smartphone's camera and scan the dynamically generated QR Code on your screen to join the board instantly.

Step 4: Join an Active Private Match

On your friend's side, joining the match takes only a single tap. They can open the invitation link on any mobile or desktop browser to be redirected straight to your board. Alternatively, they can manually enter our lobby, type your 6-digit Room ID into the "Join Room" input field, and click "Join" to enter the battle immediately.

Step 5: Leverage In-Game Interaction Tools

Our platform includes several interactive features designed to enhance friendly competition:

  • Real-Time Chat: Use the right-hand chat panel to exchange tactical banters or discuss complex Gomoku strategy details.
  • Undos and Draws: If a misclick occurs on mobile, you can send an "Undo" request. If the board becomes locked, either player can offer a "Draw". These protocols require mutual consent, preserving competitive integrity.
  • Instant Rematches: Once the game concludes, click "Play Again" to immediately trigger a rematch with swapped stone colors, letting you keep score effortlessly.
